The word "kabuki" comes from the word "kabuku," meaning "to lean". Kabuki is said to have its roots in the "Kabuki dance," which was performed in an eccentric fashion imitating the "Kabuki people" who were the people at the forefront of fashion and who had a disregard for traditional norms. Entertaining people by integrating new trends, without the restraint of old ideas – this is the spirit that has been passed down from generation to generation in Kabuki.
Kabuki’s foundations are the play, the dance, and the music. The pursuit of entertaining others through these three elements is what refined kabuki into a comprehensive art form. With practitioners becoming absorbed by their appetite for interesting and novel things, a huge collection of hard work and effort has been made in the name of entertaining other. This collection of hard work and effort made kabuki the diverse art form it is today. The kabuki of today reflects the tastes and preferences of audiences, mainly in Edo and Kamigata (Kyoto-Osaka), throughout many periods of time, and to this day, new repertoire is added through the work of famous actors and writers. The main characteristic of Kabuki is that it is rooted in the people of the city, and not the government.
The repertoire is now over 700 plays, and the basic concept is "long-run”. All the efforts of the past actors and producers are unified to one performance presented before you on the stage - that is kabuki.
